Elettaria Cardamomum

Gathering Place cardamom is hand harvested by our Farmers co-op in Southern India. It grows in the understory of the food forests, preferring to be shade grown under a canopy of coconut and banana trees. After harvest and drying, it is decorticated (hulled) and promptly shipped to us.

The sweetly aromatic cardamom is the fruit of a tropical plant related to ginger, and one of the world's most expensive spices, after saffron and vanilla. Cardamom lends its distinctive flavor to our Chai tea and Chai Spice blend.

Cardamom has been used medicinally for centuries in India and China as a carminative, stimulant, digestive aid and as treatment for urinary problems. The Egyptians chewed the seed as a tooth cleaner and in the Middle East it was considered an aphrodisiac, and is mentioned frequently in One Thousand and One Nights.
