Our first trip to India was in 2009, and our hearts were immediately engaged by the people, the spirituality, the culture, and the food. During that journey, we were fortunate to connect with inspiring organic farming initiatives, now our long-standing Community Sourcing Partners in both South and North India. From the moment we visited the farms, we knew these were people and projects we wanted to support. The products they grow are of exceptional quality and always freshly harvested, ensuring our customers receive the current year’s crop.

Before the rise of industrial agriculture and its reliance on chemical inputs, India was known for its sustainable, small-scale farms that formed the foundation of every community. While modern farming once threatened this balance, the organic movement is flourishing once again, revitalizing the land, restoring biodiversity, and improving the livelihoods of farming families across the country.

South India Community Sourcing Partner

We work with a trusted Community Sourcing Partner in the south of India that supports farmers across Karnataka State and neighbouring regions. This partner helps small and marginal farmers organize into cooperative-style groups and supports them in cultivating certified organic land. From these farms come our true cinnamon, turmeric, ginger, cayenne, smoked chili flakes and vanilla beans, some of which are also FairTrade certified.
The farmers practice intercropping~ also known as planting food forests ~ where multiple crops grow harmoniously, enriching biodiversity and soil health. This sustainable approach provides farmers with greater income from the same land, while protecting the environment for future generations. Our Community Sourcing Partner provides continuous training and support in organic farming, seed procurement, soil building, harvesting, storage, and food safety practices.
Beyond agriculture, this partnership has far-reaching social and environmental impact. Our Community Sourcing Partner leads programs that promote water conservation through rainwater harvesting, percolation pits, and check-dams, ensuring reliable year-round water access for farms and nearby communities. Their biodiversity initiatives include tree planting projects that reintroduce endangered native species within a 600-acre protected forest, creating a living research hub for future generations.

Sustainability is central to their philosophy. They transition certain wild-harvested plant species into cultivated systems to protect wild ecosystems and study regenerative crop cycles to maintain soil vitality over time. Through these practices, they balance ecological protection with responsible agricultural production.

Equally important is their commitment to community well-being. Their initiatives improve access to clean water, sanitation, housing, and education in farming villages. They also invest in essential farm infrastructure such as compost pits, and community drying yards, while ensuring fair working conditions.

All crops are processed at a state-of-the-art facility in Bangalore that is gluten-free and kosher certified. The facility has achieved BRC, the highest level of global food safety certification, and operates under a stringent Internal Control System that ensures complete farm-to-customer traceability.

North India Community Sourcing Partners

Our Community Sourcing Partners in North India work directly with thousands of certified organic, small-scale farmers across several regions of the country. These dedicated growers cultivate cumin, coriander, fennel, onion, and garlic using sustainable, regenerative farming practices that protect the soil and support rural livelihoods.

Our partners’ commitment to product quality, transparency, and long-term relationships aligns closely with our own values at Gathering Place Trading. They manage organic contract farming programs and collaborate closely with organized farmer groups, ensuring integrity from seed to shipment. Through this direct engagement, they help farmers transition to organic methods, achieve certification, and access stable, fair markets for their crops.

All products are processed in state-of-the-art, certified organic facilities with international food safety and kosher certification, allergen-free declarations, and rigorous traceability standards. This careful attention to quality and sustainability ensures that every batch of spice arrives fresh, flavourful, and ethically sourced — a true reflection of India’s vibrant farming communities and the spirit of partnership behind each harvest.
